For doctors from Sri Lanka

AMC for Sri Lankan doctors

Sri Lankan doctors have been moving to Australia for decades, and the route is well trodden. Here is how it works today.

Your route from Sri Lanka

  • Have your MBBS verified with your university through the AMC.
  • Sit the AMC MCQ at a Pearson VUE test centre — book the centre that suits you.
  • Meet the English requirement: IELTS Academic, OET, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT at the Medical Board’s scores.
  • Then the AMC clinical exam or a workplace-based assessment, and supervised practice in Australia.

Advantages you already have

Sri Lankan medical training is taught in English and has a strong clinical tradition, so many candidates find the question style familiar. The work is in the Australian specifics: guidelines, prescribing and population health.

How to prepare

  • Learn Australian practice, not the practice you trained in. The exam tests what an Australian junior doctor would do — Australian guidelines, screening programs and prescribing.
  • Cover all five areas: adult health (medicine and surgery), women’s health, child health, mental health, and population health and ethics.
  • Do questions every day and read every explanation, including why each wrong option is wrong. Recognising distractors is half the exam.
  • Use spaced repetition so the questions you got wrong come back just before you would forget them.
  • Sit timed blocks near the end: 150 questions in 3.5 hours is about 84 seconds each.
