Australia, the UK or the USA?
USMLE leads to a residency match; PLAB to the NHS; the AMC to Australian registration. The AMC route does not depend on a match: you pass the exams, find a position, and complete supervised practice. For many Indian graduates who want to work, not wait, that is the deciding factor.
Your route from India
- Confirm your medical college is recognised and your MBBS can be verified with your university through the AMC.
- Book the AMC MCQ with Pearson VUE at an available test centre.
- Meet the English requirement with IELTS Academic, OET, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT at the Medical Board’s scores.
- Then the AMC clinical exam or a workplace-based assessment, and supervised practice in Australia.
Where Indian graduates lose marks
- Australian first-line management differs from Indian practice in many areas — antibiotics, antihypertensives, diabetes, obstetric care.
- Screening programs and immunisation schedules are Australian and examined in detail.
- Ethics questions follow Australian law on consent, capacity and confidentiality.
The exam at a glance
- 150 multiple-choice questions, each with one correct answer out of five options. 120 are scored; 30 are unscored pilot questions you cannot tell apart.
- One sitting of 3.5 hours.
- Computer-adaptive: each question is chosen based on how you answered the ones before, so every candidate sits a different exam.
- Delivered by Pearson VUE at test centres around the world — you book your centre with Pearson VUE directly.
- Scored on a 0–500 scale with the pass mark shown as 250. The AMC raised the underlying standard slightly from 2026; the scale did not change.
